Meditating is amazing and comes with it’s full range of awesome benefits. However, let’s not try and lie here, meditation isn’t always the easiest thing to do and can be difficult at times. This is especially true if you’re a beginner and just started meditating. I put together this list of 15 tips that are sure to help you meditate better, whether you’re a beginner or have been meditating for years.

15 Meditation Tips

Eliminate your biggest distraction

Before you start, switch your phone to airplane mode. There’s no bigger distraction or interrupter when meditating than a phone receiving phone calls, texts, and other notifications that go off.

Switch it up

You don’t always have to meditate in the same exact place… try meditating in different places! Switch it up and try meditating at work, from a park, or on your commute to work.

Close your eyes

Close your eyes, don’t keep them open during your meditation. Open eyes allow for distractions from everything else around you, so be sure to keep your eyes close so you can focus on yourself and from within, not on the things physically surrounding you.

Mind wandering is okay

It’s okay if your mind wonders – don’t let it upset or frustrate you. If your mind starts to wander off while you’re meditating, just take a deep breath and try to re-focus on your meditation.

Let your thoughts come and go

Don’t fight your thoughts, simply let them come and go. However, at the same time, it’s important not to cling onto any one particular thought the entire time you’re meditating, as well as on the contrary, being sure not to push unpleasant thoughts away.

Meditation journals are your friend

Keep a meditation journal and write everything down before and after each meditation. By recording your thoughts and feelings before and after meditating, you’ll be able to learn a lot about yourself.

Find the right level of comfort

Be comfortable… but not too comfortable! You want to make sure you’re in a comfortable position while meditating, but being too comfortable could result in you falling asleep during your meditation.

Lighten up and smile!

Don’t take it too seriously – keep a gentle smile on your face the entire time you’re meditating and you’ll notice a difference in how doing so helps keep you at peace, relaxed, and provides an enhanced meditation experience.

Create a meditation space

Create a meditation space for yourself. Find a quiet, relaxing space somewhere in your home, declutter it, and setup your own meditation space there with all your meditating essentials (such as a cushion or cozy place to sit, your meditation journal, plants and natural elements, crystals, incense, etc.).

Having a meditation routine is key

Create a meditation routine for yourself. Determine the best time(s) for you to meditate and then meditate at the same times every day. Be consistent with your meditation and make it part of your daily routine.

How long to meditate for?

How long should you be meditating for? Generally, 20 minutes is a good amount of time to meditate for, however, if you’re a beginner, start out meditating for 5 minutes at a time and gradually work your way up to a full 20.

Listen to meditation music

Make use of meditation music! Meditation music is an excellent tool for helping you to feel relaxed while meditating. There are all different kinds of meditation music out there, so just start exploring it and find the music that works best for you.

Don’t be too full or too empty

Don’t meditate on a full stomach. The best time to meditate is before or 2 hours after a meal. A full stomach can lead to drowsiness and distractions from indigestion, so it’s best to avoid this if possible and not meditate right after eating a large meal. On the other hand, also be sure not to meditate when you’re completely starving. Trying to meditate when you’re super hungry can be near impossible when hunger and the thought of food takes over your mind. Being hungry is as much of a distraction as indigestion can be.

Find the meditation technique best for you

Find the meditation technique that works best for you. With so many different types of meditations, it can be overwhelming knowing which one is for you. From visualization, mindfulness, mantra meditation, loving-kindness meditation, and everything else in between, there’s no one size fits all approach to which type of meditation is best. My advice? One great way to discover which is best for you and an awesome tool to use is to try out guided meditations to help you figure out what meditation techniques are the best fit.

Remember the benefits

Always focus on the positives of meditating and remember the benefits that come from it. We all have those times where we may find ourselves feeling a little unmotivated to meditate. However, when these times do occur, simply remember the benefits and why you meditate to help motivate you to do so.
